Scarlet Tanager eating a mulberry.
It measures between 18 and 19 centimeters in length and weighs between 27.9 and 35.5 grams. (Hilty, 2016).\nThe male's plumage is bright red, which gave rise to the name. Part of the wings and tail are black. The species presents sexual dimorphism, with the female's plumage being less showy, brown on the upper parts and reddish-brown on the lower parts.\nThe immature male is similar to the female in plumage, but the beak is completely black and not brown. An important characteristic of the genus Ramphocelus, which occurs exclusively in males, is the shiny white callus at the base of the jaw.\nThis species is not considered among those with the most beautiful songs. The calling (or warning) vocalization is very harsh. The song is a melodious, trisyllabic warble, which is usually repeated without haste. Sometimes some individuals vocalize together.
