The Frigidarium or cold bath room in the Stabian Baths of Pompeii. Likely built in the early 1st century BC.\n\nThe Stabian Baths are an ancient Roman bath complex in Pompeii, Italy, the oldest and largest of the city's five public baths. Their original construction dates back to around 125 BC, making them one of the oldest known bathing facilities of antiquity. They remained in use until the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.\n\nThe actual spa centre, located on the eastern side, was divided into two sections separated by a praefurnium: the men's section on the south side and the women's section on the north side. The male sector was divided into an apodyterium, with an adjacent frigidarium, from which one accessed the tepidarium and then the calidarium. The smaller female sector was divided into apodyterium, tepidarium and calidarium, but without the rich decorations that characterized the male sector. Near the swimming pool there are other rooms, which had different functions: one, extremely elegant, was reserved for the superintendent of the spa while another probably served as a sferisterium.
