Leaves opposite, sometimes whorled, oblong to lanceolate, unstalked and half-clasping the stem, coarsely toothed. Flowers bright purplish-pink, 15-25mm, in leafy raceme, sometimes branched, petals notched; stigma 4-lobed.\nHabitat: Damp and waste places, dykes, ditches, river and pond margins.\nFlowering Season: June-September.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, except the far north, Faeroes and Iceland.\n\nThis is a common Species along Wet Habitats in the Netherlands. Indian pipe (Monotropa uniflora) flower heads from above. A wildflower not a mushroom, in the New England forest in midsummer. With one flower on each stem, this is one of the few plants that lack chlorophyll (which makes plants green). It can live in dark forests because it needs no sunlight for photosynthesis. It survives by parasitizing certain fungi, trees and decomposing plants. Also called ghost plant.
Beauty in nature
Rhaphiolepis indica, commonly known as India hawthorn, is a dense, broad-leaved evergreen shrub that typically grows to 4-6’ tall and as wide. Native to southern China, it grows in other Asian countries, including Japan, and Australia. It features serrate, oblong, dak-green leaves. Fragrant, white to light pink flowers bloom in spring in clusters. Flowers are followed by small dark blue berries.
