The wide variety of weapons and equipment used throughout the course of the second world war make for fascinating research and exploration - The PIAT or Projector, Infantry, Anti Tank was a spring operated, front loaded anti tank gun that lobbed a charge at enemy armour. It proved to be quite ineffective at range, and troops had to be dangerously close to hope that the round would penetrate. \n\nIn a similar role was the mortar; a key component of any infantry unit, the concept is simple: front load explosive rounds, a small charge then launches the round at the trajectory of the mortar tube. Mortars ended up being one of the most deadly weapons of the second world war.\n\nThis image was taken at an outdoor event over the weekend of 11th-13th August 2023, where reenactors, living historians, and members of the public can come to experience what life was like during the second world war, with live demonstrations, battle reenactments, and static displays from all over the world.
