An impressive wide view inside the majestic Roman Pantheon, in the heart of Ancient Rome, with the central apse. Built in 27 BC by the Consul Marco Vispanio Agrippa for the Emperor Augustus and dedicated to all the Roman divinities, the majestic Pantheon is one of the best preserved Roman structures in the Eternal City and in the world. In addition, the Pantheon is also a Catholic church consecrated in 609 AD by Pope Bonficio IV and called the Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres. Within its perimeter some members of the Italian royal family and famous artists are buried, including the painter Raphael, a great protagonist of Renaissance art. The dome of the Pantheon, built in concrete and brick, is a masterpiece of engineering and the prototype of all the domes subsequently built in Christian churches in Europe. With a diameter of 43.44 meters, it is still the largest dome in the world today. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Architectural detail of the ceiling of the coffered dome of the Pantheon. The Pantheon ('to every god') in the Piazza della Rotonda in Rome, Italy was built by Marcus Agrippa in 27 BC and rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in about 126 AD. The concrete for the coffered dome was poured in moulds, probably mounted on temporary scaffolding. The oculus (round opening on top of the dome) is the main source of natural light.

The Pantheon or temple of all gods is a former Roman temple in Rome, Italy. It is one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings, in large part because it has been in continuous use throughout its history, and since the 7th century, the Pantheon has been used as a church dedicated to St. Mary and the Martyrs.
