Robert Gould Shaw is seen leading members of the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry 1863. The ad was placed by the United States Postal Service, Philatelic Sales Division, in washington D.C.  Life magazine began as a photojurnalism magazine in 1883 and was closed by its last owner, Time Inc., in 2004.
This attack on 30 June 1916 at Richebourg-l'Avoué in France saw troops capture the Boar's Head, held by the German 6th Army. The casualties of the battle are commemorated in this plaque.
