The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem with the top of the Wailing Wall on the right. The Dome of the Rock is a shrine located on the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem. It was initially completed in 691 CE at the order of Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik during the Second Fitna. The Dome of the Rock is now one of the oldest works of Islamic architecture. It has been called 'Jerusalem's most recognizable landmark'. The octagonal plan of the structure may have been influenced by the Byzantine Chapel of St Mary (also known as Kathisma and al-Qadismu) built between 451 and 458 on the road between Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

$Jerusalem, 12. 17. 2023:\nZion Gate is located at the southern end of the Old City of Jerusalem. It is one of the gates set by the Ottomans when they re-erected the City’s walls, in the early 16th Century. The gate has a typical L-Shape, designed to slow down oncoming attackers. Above the gate a projecting balcony (Mashikuli) enabled dropping boiling oil, snakes, on excrement on potential invaders. Up to the 19th century the gate was closed every night, by heavy metal doors. In addition to its protective design, the gate was also decorated with various stone ornamentations. The gate also bears an Arab inscription glorifying Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman Sultan who ordered and sponsored the re-fortification of Jerusalem. In May 1948 Palmach forces managed to reach the Jewish quarter by blowing up part of the wall next to the gate. Unfortunately, later they retreated, and the Jewish Quarter was evacuated. The Jordanian occupied the Jewish Quarter and the old City until 1967. To this day the front of the gate is battered by bullet holes from these battles. A white stone plaque in the gate records the battles here in 1948, and the reclaiming of the gate by during the Six-Day War, in 1967.$

The people of Israel were worshiping the Canaanite idols. The Lord allowed the Midianites to conquer and rule over the Israelites as punishment. The Midianites destroyed the land and the crops each year before they were harvested. The Israelites were helpless. Finally, after seven years they called out to God for help. The angel of the Lord spoke to Gideon, calling on him to rescue the Israelites. That very night Gideon and his men destroyed the idols and built a new altar to the Lord. When the Israelites woke the next morning, they were furious. They wanted to kill Gideon, but did not. A message arrived saying that the Midianites and Amalekites had crossed the Jordan River into the Jezreel Valley. Gideon called on the Israelites to come and fight. God gave very detailed instructions about how Gideon would defeat the enemy. Gideon obeyed God and was victorious. The men who had helped him carry out God’s plan were punished. Israel lived forty years in peace, but once again returned to idol worship after Gideon’s death.
