White wood asters (Eurybia divaricata, foreground) and white snakeroot (Ageratina altissima, background) blooming in the Connecticut woods, late summer. The latter is toxic -- a pretty poison that should be removed if growing near livestock. When eaten by cows, the poison contaminates their milk. Milk sickness is thought to be the cause of the death of Abraham Lincoln's mother. Both wildflowers are abundant and visually appealing, and they are important pollinating plants. Bees and butterflies love them.
Before the flowering plants, the landscape was dominated with plants that looked like ferns for hundreds of millions of years. Pteridophytes show many characteristics of their ancestors: unlike most other members of the Plant Kingdom, pteridophytes don’t reproduce through seeds, they reproduce through spores instead.

A beautiful walk through the boreal forest brings you to an amazing sight, a salmon river emerging from an underground cave, and huge colonies of vibrant green ferns. The salmon pool runs underground through a tunnel formed by erosion through the rock. Fish disappear into the opening and reappear about 800 metres away where they rest before continuing upstream to spawn. this unusual site offers visitors an opportunity to view Atlantic salmon in their natural environment, and is located near Roddickton in Newfoundland Canada. This image is the upstream view of the cave where the salmon emerge as they swim upstream, with the ferns in colonies in the right side of the image.
