Picardie is a region in northern France, located immediately north of the French capital Paris and the Ile de France. Although largely inland, the region does border the English Channel near Abbeville. The area is, sadly, known for its central part in the trench warfare of the First World War (1914-1918) and hosts a large number of battlefields, war cemeteries and memorials.

Mosaic Sign for the Languedoc-Roussillon town of Elne, in South Western France. The town which stands four kilometres inland from the Mediterranean coast and twelve kilometres from Perpignan, the current capital of the region. Elne, part of Occitania administrative region, was originally called Illiberis and was the then capital of the Roussillon region. Hannibal and his famed elephants, stayed here for a while whilst travelling to Itally in the 3rd century BC.The Ville d'Elne sign features the town's Roman style cathedral, Sainte-Eulalie-et-Sainte-Julie, which was completed in the 11th century. After a terrible siege in 1285 in which the town was burned and inhabitants massacred, when Elne was part of adjacent Spain and Catalonia, the rebuilding of the Cathedral was never finished. The tower on the right of the sign was built, but the tower on the left was not rebuilt until much later - accounting for the fact that this tower was then built in a contrasting red brick, as it remains to this day. This architectural quirk now gives a distinctive and unique character to the building and as such is featured on the nameplate sign for the town.
