Rome, Italy, June 15 -- A portion of the monastery of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (San Paolo fuori le Mura) in the Ostiense district of Rome. Built in 324 A.D. at the behest of the Roman emperor Constantine on the tomb of the Apostle Paul, the Basilica was enlarged to its present form starting from 386 AD. by Emperor Theodosius I and was consecrated in 402 AD. by Pope Innocent I. This sacred place for Christianity was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1980. The Basilica of Saint Paul is one of the four ancient major basilicas of Rome, along with the basilicas of Saint John in the Lateran, Saint Peter's, and Saint Mary Major. Built in the ancient district of Borgo and later incorporated along Via della Conciliazione, near Piazza San Pietro, this palace was built between 1499 and 1517 to a design by the architect Donato Bramante (1444-1514). Initially commissioned by Cardinal Adriano Costellesi, the building was acquired in the 18th century by the Torlonia family.
