The beautiful facade of the Cathedral or Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta in the historic heart of Pesaro, a town on the Adriatic coast of Italy in the Marche region. Built in the 12th century, the Cathedral of Pesaro stands on a previous temple from the Peleo-Christian era of which some mosaics are preserved. The Romanesque-Gothic style facade is unfinished and has a simple ogival portal. Known as the City of Music and the City of the Bicycle, Pesaro was founded by the Piceni people during the Iron Age, to develop as an important center on the Adriatic Sea under the rule of Ancient Rome and later in the Middle Ages. Pesaro is known and loved in the world of music and opera for being the birthplace of the composer Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868), author of works such as The Barber of Seville, Guillaume Tell and La Gazza Ladra. The bronze Capitoline Wolf in the Museo Nuovo in the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the Campidoglio (the ancient Capitoline Hill) —where it has been housed since 1473 — is one of the icons of the founding of Rome. The statue was long thought to be an Etruscan work of the 5th century BC. However, radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dating has found that it was possibly manufactured in the 13th century.
