Its name is conventional as a result of a wrong interpretation of a Latin inscription that  aligns it with the temple of Hera, in Crotone. It housed the cult of the goddess of fertility. The The temple was destroyed  in 406 B.C. by the Carthaginians.

Temple of Hera in Selinunte - Sicily - Italy
Selinunte is an ancient Greek city, close to the southwestern coast of Sicily. Built by Greek settlers in the 7th century BC, the site is considered the largest archaeological park in Europe. The temples are designated by letters because of the difficulty of defining with certainty the deity they honored. Temple E in the photo measures 67 by 25 meters, with 15 by 6 columns. Demolished by an earthquake, it was straightened up in the 1960s. It is made even more attractive by the light of a late October afternoon.
