Ostend is known for its sea-side esplanade, including the Royal Galleries of Ostend, pier, and fine-sand beaches. Ostend is visited by many day-trippers heading to the beaches, especially during July and August. Tourists from inland Belgium and from abroad mostly arrive by train (day trips) and head for the closest beach area, the Klein Strand, located next to the pier. The locals and other residents in Belgium usually occupy the larger beach (het Groot Strand). The vibrant city center has a lot to offer throughout the year, but just outside the center, there are a lot of possibilities. Several cycling routes will take you to unique green spots in and around Ostend, while a walk makes you look at the city and its history in a completely different way. More than 50 renowned and world-famous artists made enormous paintings on walls as well as fantastic art installations in open spaces in Ostend. Altogether, this creates an artistic journey in and around Ostend.
