Spoleto, Umbria, Italy, October 20 -- The Cortile d'Onore (Honour Courtyard) inside the imposing Rocca Albornoziana castle which dominates the medieval town of Spoleto, in the heart of the green mountains of Umbria, in central Italy. Built in 1363 during the pontificate of Pope Innocent VI under the direction of the Spanish cardinal Egidio Albornoz, this imposing castle was a military bastion over the whole of central Italy during the dominion of the State of the Church over these territories. Today it is an important museum center and the setting for the numerous cultural events. Spoleto was one of the major centers of the Umbrian people, before being conquered and becoming an important colony of Rome. In medieval times it was subjected to the dominion of the Lombards, becoming a Duchy. Spoleto, one of the most visited medieval cities in Italy, hosts the Festival of the Two Worlds, a world-famous event that brings together hundreds of artists, musicians, classical dancers and opera singers every year. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Since 2011, the Basilica of San Salvatore in Spoleto is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Super wide angle image in high definition format.
