Ouidah / Whydah / Ajuda, Atlantique Department, Benin: the Portuguese Fort of Ouidah, also known as Fort São João Baptista de Ajudá. Originally built in 1682 and rebuilt in1721, it served as a trade outpost, including for the transatlantic slave trade. The fort was strategically positioned to facilitate the export of enslaved Africans and the import of goods like tobacco, alcohol, and weapons.
