Descent of the Ganges, also known as Arjuna's penance, at Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, India. Measuring 96 by 43 feet (29 m × 13 m), it is a giant open-air bas-relief carved out of two monolithic rocks. The legend depicted is the story of the descent of the sacred river, the Ganges from the heavens to earth, led by Bhagiratha. Centuries ago, they had water running between the two rocks; the bas-relief is sculpture at its best, and not seen anywhere else in India. It survived the Tsunamis of the 13th Century and 2004.
