The Baptism Site on the Jordan side of the Jordan River is one of the most important recent discoveries in biblical archaeology. Excavations only began here in 1996, following Jordan's peace treaty with Israel in 1994, but have already uncovered more than 20 churches, caves and baptismal pools dating from the Roman and Byzantine periods.

Sednaya is a unique place in the Middle East. It is one of the only two (the other is Maalula) Aramaic speaking villages in the world. Aramaic is said to be the native language of Jesus. The local people in these villages speak more or less Arabic now, but there is a small community of Christian people living in the region and they practice Aramaic language rituals in this (and some other) monastery. Aramaic sounds like ancient Hebrew.

The church stands on the site of a Byzantine predecessor church, which Aelia Eudocia had built in honor of Mary. This church was destroyed by the Persians in 614, but was soon rebuilt. Like other Christian sites in Jerusalem, the Fatimid Caliph al-Hakim had this church destroyed in 1009.\n\nThe building that can still be seen today was built by Avda, the widow of Balduin I, in 1142 because it was believed to be the home of Joachim and Anna, the parents of Mary, next to the Bethesda pond. After the conquest of Jerusalem by Sultan Saladin, the church became a Koranic school in 1192. In 1856, Sultan Abdülmecid handed the building over to Napoleon III as thanks for his support of the Ottoman Empire in the Crimean War. At the time, however, the building was in a deplorable state. The Turks believed that the place was haunted and the Turkish governor had used the church as a stable. The garbage that had accumulated inside almost reached the roof. If you take a closer look at the façade of the church, you will notice that the walls are slightly inclined - an indication of the inadequate weight of the vaults derived from the buttresses. The French government commissioned the architects Honoré Daumet and Christophe Édouard Mauss (1829-1914) with the restoration.
