The Sacred Valley of the Incas or Urubamba Valley is a valley in the Andes  of Peru, close to the Inca capital of Cusco and below the ancient sacred city of Machu Picchu. The valley is generally understood to include everything between Pisac  and Ollantaytambo, parallel to the Urubamba River, or Vilcanota River or Wilcamayu, as this Sacred river is called when passing through the valley. It is fed by numerous rivers which descend through adjoining valleys and gorges, and contains numerous archaeological remains and villages. The valley was appreciated by the Incas due to its special geographical and climatic qualities. It was one of the empire's main points for the extraction of natural wealth, and the best place for maize production in Peru.

The Palace, a complex of several connected and adjacent buildings and courtyards, was built by several generations on a wide artificial terrace during four century period. The Palace was used by the Mayan aristocracy for bureaucratic functions, entertainment, and ritualistic ceremonies.

Guatavita, Colombia - June 28, 2016: Looking from the main entrancce into the main town square in the Andean town of Guatavita in the Cundinamarca Department of the South American country of Colombia. A section of the Andes Mountains can be seen in the background. Though completed in the 1960s, the town is designed and built in the colonial Spanish style of architecture. Situated about an hour's drive from the capital city of Bogotá, it is located at an elevation of 8,660 feet above sea level and is a popular weekend destination with both local Colombians, and tourists. On the wall is a sign indicating the Guatavita Museum. The Embalse de Tominé (the Lake), can be seen as a sliver just above the square walls. The water level is low due to the El Niño phenomenon.
