The iconic symbol of France - the Rooster Cockerel - colloquially named Chantecler - Chanter, to sing - Cler, loudly or clearly. The origin of this national French emblem dates back to ancient history. It was a time that the Romans were laughing at Gauls, because of a linguistic coincidence. The Gauls occupied what is now France, amongst other European countries and in the Latin language of the Romans, the word Gallus means Gaul but it also means Rooster. With time, the French kings adopted the Rooster as a symbol of courage and bravery. During the Revolution, the Rooster became the symbol of people and of the State: it was engraved upon coins. Napoleon preferred the eagle, the symbol of imperial Rome, but the raptor was soon dismissed by the people. Today, the French rooster can be seen in many places: on French stamps, on National sports shirts, as mascots - and at the entrance to the Élysée Palace - amongst many others. The rooster is also the symbol of the Wallonia region and the French Community of Belgium.
