The Angolan Civil War (1975 to 2002), was a brutal and complex conflict rooted in the power struggle following Angola's independence from Portugal. The war was primarily fought between two factions: the MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola), which was Marxist-Leninist and backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba, and UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola), supported by the US and South Africa. The conflict was fueled by Cold War rivalries, ethnic divisions, and competition over Angola's rich natural resources, particularly oil and diamonds. The war claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, displaced millions, and devastated the country's infrastructure. The war formally ended in 2002 with the death of UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi and a subsequent peace agreement, paving the way for Angola's gradual recovery and development.
