The gunboat sheds in Holmen where built between 1813 and 1850, housing long oar-powered boats equipped with a small cannon. The gunboats where made to defend Copenhagen's inner harbor after the English took the Danish fleet in 1807.\nToday most of the sheds have been converted into posh offices mainly for creative businesses like architectural companies.\nSince the 1690'ies Holmen in Copenhagen was the Naval Station with piers, shipyards and storage facilities. As a military facility it was completely closed to the public. In 1993 the naval station was closed and converted into an attractive district with housing, restaurants, cafés and a wealth of schools for the creative arts. In 2005 the new Danish National Opera House on Holmen was inaugurated.
