This is the Ace of Clubs playing card from a pack manufactured by Charles Goodall (1785-1851) of Camden, London. Charles Goodall was in business for over 100 years, from 1820 to 1929. This original deck was produced in about 1895, and is one of a small and haphazard series of 'Historic Playing Cards'. The court cards feature four different historic British royal dynasties, as follows: Spades: Hanoverian (1714–1901), last representative Queen Victoria. Hearts: Stuart (1371–1714), last representative Queen Anne. (Originated in Scotland.) Diamonds: Tudor (1485–1603), last representative Queen Elizabeth I. Clubs: Plantagenet (1126–1485), last representative Richard III. All aces and court cards from this deck are available here. Below are some more antique playing cards, including some from Bernhard Dondorf's rare 1895 'Shakespeare' deck: .

This is the king of espadas / swords or spades from a pack of Spanish playing cards (baraja) dated 1878, numbered twelve. It was produced in Turnhout, Belgium, by the playing card manufacturer Leonard Bierman. Belgian playing cards follow the French style of suits, with clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades. At this time, it was felt that there was a market for Spanish-style cards, with their four suits Copas (Cups / Hearts), Oros (Gold Coins / Diamonds), Bastos (Clubs) and Espadas (Swords / Spades). There are ten cards in each of the four suits, each one lacking the 8 and 9. The court / picture cards are numbered 10, 11 and 12.

Out of copyright. The back design on this ten of hearts illustrates the style of the Regency Age, just after 1800 in England. On a windy autumn day, the man wears white trousers with a tailcoat and top hat. His female companion wears a bonnet, loose scarf and holds a fur muff to warm her hands. Typical of the time, the card is wider than modern-day cards.
