Hartmannswillerkopf, ook wel bekend onder de naam Vieil Armand, is een berg in de Vogezen in het zuiden van de Elzas. De piek van de berg ligt op 956 meter boven de zeespiegel en naar het oosten heeft de bezoeker een vrij uitzicht over de vallei van de Rijn. Bij Hartmannswillerkopf werd tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog zwaar gevochten. De strijd tussen het Duitse en Franse leger leidde tot een loopgravenoorlog. Restanten van deze loopgraven en versterkingen zijn op deze locatie nog aanwezig.

Robert Gould Shaw is seen leading members of the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry 1863. The bas relief of the monument, dedicated in October 1914, depicts six iconic characters from Longfellow's works: Miles Standish, Sandalphon, the Village Blacksmith, the Spanish Student, Evangeline, and Hiawatha. The leading poet of the Victorian era, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) contributed to the development of a distinctly American literature.

This column marks the fire of 1666 and was completed in 1677 by Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke. It is 202 feet (62 metres) high, the same distance to Pudding Lane where the fire began. This pillar was commenced during the mayoralty of Sir Richard Ford, Knight, Lord Mayor of London, in the year 1671. It was further elevated under the mayoralties of Sir George Waterman, Knight, Sir Robert Hanson, Knight, Sir William Hooker, Knight, Sir Robert Viner, Knight, and Sir Joseph Sheldon, Knight; and completed during the mayoralty of Sir Thomas Davies, in 1677.
