They occupy the whole centre of County Wicklow and stretch outside its borders into the counties of Dublin, Wexford and Carlow. Where the mountains extend into County Dublin, they are known locally as the Dublin Mountains. The highest peak is Lugnaquilla at 925 metres \nThe mountains are primarily composed of granite surrounded by an envelope of mica-schist and much older rocks such as quartzite. They were pushed up during the Caledonian orogeny at the start of the Devonian period and form part of the Leinster Chain, the largest continuous area of granite in Ireland and Britain. The mountains owe much of their present topography to the effects of the last ice age, which deepened the glens and created corrie and ribbon lakes. Copper and lead have been the main metals mined in the mountains and a brief gold rush occurred in the 18th century. Several major river systems have their source in the mountains, such as the Liffey, Dargle, Slaney and Avoca rivers. Powerscourt Waterfall is the second tallest in Ireland at 121 metres (397 feet). A number of these rivers have been harnessed to create reservoirs for drinking water for Dublin and its surroundings.

The Galty Mountains, also known as the Galtee Mountains, are a stunning range of peaks located in the south of Ireland. The highest peak, Galtymore, stands at 917 meters (3,009 feet) and provides hikers with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.\n\nHiking to the top of the Galty Mountains is a popular activity for both locals and visitors alike. The trails are well marked and range in difficulty from easy to moderate, with some challenging sections for experienced hikers. There are a number of different routes that hikers can take to reach the summit of Galtymore, each offering unique views and experiences.\n\nOne popular route is the Black Road route, which starts from the village of Glencush and takes hikers through a beautiful forested area before climbing up to the open mountain. From there, the trail follows a steep ascent up the side of Galtymore, with stunning views of the surrounding countryside and valleys below.\n\nAs hikers climb higher, the terrain becomes more rugged and the views become even more spectacular. From the summit of Galtymore, hikers can see for miles around, taking in the rolling hills and valleys of the surrounding countryside, as well as the distant coastline.\n\nOn a clear day, it's possible to see all the way to the city of Cork in the south and the Wicklow Mountains in the east. The summit of Galtymore itself is marked by a large cairn, which makes for a great photo opportunity.\n\nWhile hiking to the top of the Galty Mountains can be challenging, it's also incredibly rewarding. The stunning scenery, fresh mountain air, and sense of accomplishment make it an unforgettable experience. Just be sure to come prepared with appropriate gear, including sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing, and plenty of water and snacks.
