Villa de Leyva, Colombia - September 14, 2014: looking across the largest town square in Colombia to the Northern corner of the main plaza or square in Villa de Leyva; it is Sunday morning and very few people are on the streets or square; in the foreground a young lady poses for a cell-phone photo. Founded in 1572 and located at just over 7000 feet above sea level on the Andes Mountains, the whole town was declared a National Monument in 1954 to protect its colonial architecture and heritage. It is located in the Department of Boyacá, in the South American country of Colombia and is a popular Conference destination. Killit (Dereiçi), an almost abandoned ancient Syrian village 5 km from Savur, stands out for its stone buildings. The village was once a large and important Syrian settlement before the emigration and had three churches and three monasteries belonging to the Orthodox, Protestant and Catholic communities. The village was known for its wines and grape production, and the grape harvest tradition still continues in the region. One of the most striking buildings in the village, the Mor Yuhanon Monastry, dates back to the 7th century.
