Chromatic Pool measures approximately 30 feet (9 meters) in diameter and is about 20 feet (6 meters) deep. It was first documented during the 1870s Hayden Geological Survey, which was one of the earliest scientific expeditions to explore and map the park's geothermal features. Chromatic Pool is named for its vibrant and varied colors, which come from the Greek word 'chroma,' meaning color. The pool's hues range from deep blues to bright oranges and yellows, a result of the different thermophilic bacteria and minerals thriving in its hot waters.
