Rome, Italy: The church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus (1584), known primarily as the Chiesa del Gesù or more simply as Il Gesù , is the mother church of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits' headquarters. The construction of the church, which overlooks Piazza del Gesù , is considered an important turning point in the history of art , because it was built according to the spirit of the decrees of the Council of Trent: it was designed with a single nave, because the attention of the faithful was concentrated on the altar. The Church of the Gesù was the model for various buildings of worship erected by the Society of Jesus around the world, such as the Church of the Gesu at the Ateneo de Manila - architects Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, Giacomo Della Porta and Michelangelo Buonarroti
