The ancient Dacian ruins at Sarmizegetusa Regia, in the Transylvania region of Romania. Sarmizegetusa Regia was the capital and the most important military, religious and political centre of the Dacians prior to the wars with the Roman Empire. Erected on top of a 1200 m high mountain, the fortress, comprising six citadels, was the core of a strategic defensive system in the Orăştie Mountains (in present-day Romania). People visit the Douaumont ossuary, a memorial containing the remains of some 130,000 soldiers who died on the battlefield during the Battle of Verdun in World War I. It is located in Douaumont, France, within the Verdun battlefield. During the 300 days of the Battle of Verdun (21 February 1916 -€“ 19 December 1916) at least 230,000 men died, though some estimates are much higher.
