Sacramento, California, USA - March 23, 2011: A 1999 USA postage stamp with an illustration of Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) sliding into home plate. Robinson was the first African-American person to play in the modern Major Leagues. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1947, and two years later was named the National League's MVP. The stamp was designed by Howard Paine.

Pulitzer became a reporter in St. Louis, Missouri. By the time of his death in 1911, he had completely revitalized several newspapers, bringing them back to profitability and credibility. Among them was the New York \\'World\\'. He had also endowed the Journalism School at Columbia University and, in his will, established the Pulitzer Prize.
