Glacier covered mountains abound in several mountain ranges of the large continent including continuous mountains forming the Antarctic Peninsula. Storms are born on the high plateaus and come racing down the mountain face. This photo is from an island in the Peninsula.

$The first confirmed surface conquest of the North Pole was accomplished by Ralph Plaisted, Walt Pederson, Gerry Pitzl and Jean Luc Bombardier, who traveled over the ice by snowmobile and arrived on 19 April 1968. The United States Air Force independently confirmed their position.\n\nOn 6 April 1969 Wally Herbert and companions Allan Gill, Roy Koerner and Kenneth Hedges of the British Trans-Arctic Expedition became the first men to reach the North Pole on foot (albeit with the aid of dog teams and airdrops). They continued on to complete the first surface crossing of the Arctic Ocean – and by its longest axis, Barrow, Alaska, to Svalbard – a feat that has never been repeated.[33][34] Because of suggestions (later proven false) of Plaisted's use of air transport, some sources classify Herbert's expedition as the first confirmed to reach the North Pole over the ice surface by any means.[34][35] In the 1980s Plaisted's pilots Weldy Phipps and Ken Lee signed affidavits asserting that no such airlift was provided.[36] It is also said that Herbert was the first person to reach the pole of inaccessibility.[37]\n\nOn 17 August 1977 the Soviet nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika completed the first surface vessel journey to the North Pole.$

Snowy mountain reflects in the water black and white

A team of mountaineers led by Vern Tejas snowshoes down the Kahiltna Glacier after carrying loads to what will become their next camp as they make their way up the West Buttress route on Denali. The route traverses Windy Corner just under a prominent skyline buttress before it disappears into the clouds at upper right, about halfway up the mountain.

Winter has arrived on Dancing Woman Mountain. Snow cover envelopes the entire scene from range land in the foreground to forests coated in hoarfrost, to the brilliant white mountain peaks in the distance. A deep blue sky above holds an array of puffy white clouds.

A frigid winter scene plays out in Interior Alaska. Temperatures in Interior Alaska have fallen to -30 to 50 trapping the snow on the trees. The frigid temperatures create stunning scenes.

From just above 15,000 feet during the first ascent of the Wyoming Spur, the view takes in the upper six thousand feet of the south face of Denali, at 20,320 feet the highest peak in North America. Big Bertha is the huge hanging glacier on the left side of the face. The upper Cassin Ridge rises below the left skyline; the American Direct is the slight bulge to the right of Big Bertha. Our route is the sunlit ridge below the right skyline.
