The Latin name Corvus identifies this bird as a member of the crow family. They are common around herds of deer, where they frequently perch on the animals themselves, sometimes pecking into the corner of an eye in order to reach some tasty insect. How did the name 'jackdaw' arise? I like the idea that it comes from this bird's staccato 'chack!' call; or that 'jack' is a generic name for 'person'. Research, however, suggests otherwise. 'Jackdaw' is first found in 16th century English, and before that they are referred to as 'daws'. The (Oxford English Dictionary) suggests that the 'jack' part of the name means 'small', though I don't see the sense in this. (How did 'daw' become 'small daw', unless 'daw' first referred to a crow?) In Britain, dialect names for the jackdaw are many. Ka or kae (Scotland and northern England) has been used since the 14th century; in the English Midlands, co or coo. Other names include college-bird (referring to a cathedral), jackerdaw, jacko, ka-wattie, chimney-sweep bird (because they nest in chimneys) and sea-crow from their presence on coasts. My favourite is the simple 'Jack'. Poetically, a flock of crows might be called a clattering, though 'flock' is more usual.
