Auschwitz Birkenau, Poland, 9 January 2022: The railway conducing into Auschwitz II Birkenau nazist extermination camp
A historical image of a wooden barrack at Auschwitz II-Birkenau, one of the largest and most notorious Nazi concentration and extermination camps during the Holocaust. Built in the early 1940s as part of the camp's rapid expansion, these wooden structures housed thousands of prisoners under inhumane conditions. The barracks were overcrowded, lacked basic sanitation, and offered minimal protection from the cold, contributing to widespread disease and suffering. Auschwitz-Birkenau became the site of the mass extermination of Jews, Roma, and others, with over a million people murdered there between 1942 and 1945. Today, the camp serves as a memorial and museum, preserving the memory of the victims and educating future generations about the atrocities of the Holocaust.

Gas Chamber II, also known as Crematorium II, was one of the largest killing facilities at Birkenau. Built in 1942, it featured an underground undressing room and gas chamber, disguised as a shower room to deceive victims. Zyklon B pellets were dropped through ceiling vents, killing up to 2,000 people at a time within minutes. The bodies were then transported by elevator to ovens in the upper-level crematorium. Along with Crematoria III, it handled the bulk of the mass murders at the camp. In late 1944, the Nazis blew up Gas Chamber II in an attempt to destroy evidence before Soviet forces arrived.

Crematorium III at Birkenau, constructed in 1942, was one of four main extermination facilities at Auschwitz-Birkenau. It featured a Zyklon B gas chamber and crematory ovens designed to handle mass murder, with the capacity to burn hundreds of bodies daily. Like the other crematoria, it was part of the Nazi effort to exterminate Jews, Roma, and other prisoners. In November 1944, as Soviet forces approached, the Nazis destroyed parts of the crematorium to cover up their crimes, leaving the ruins that stand today as a grim reminder of the atrocities committed.
