This image was made in March 2013 on the roof of the Washington National Cathedral (Episcopal) in Washington DC. \n\nThis view is looking down the east side of the Cathedral, where we see a repeating pattern of pinnacles and flying buttresses. \n\nMany of the pinnacles throughout the Cathedral were toppled or otherwise damaged during an earthquake in August 2011. By the time of this photo, most of the pinnacles were restored and put in place, as seen in this photo. \n\nUnlike many modern churches and cathedrals, the flying buttresses are structural, not merely decorative. Magpie Mine is near the village of Sheldon and dates back to 1740. It is famous for fatal running battles it had with other mines over resources which led to a 'widows' curse' on the men of Magpie Mine after they were implicated - but cleared - of the deaths of some of their competitors. When the mine was closed in 1958 it was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire. It is a standing old ruin which is free for the public to view and explore.
