Its rim varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet. The Bryce Amphitheater is 12 miles long, 3 miles wide and 800 feet deep. The Paiute Indians believed that the hoodoos (pinnacles) were people whom the gods turned to stone. The area was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who was sent here by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He settled in this area in 1874.
