$The Northern Canal Walkway, which includes the Great River Wall) has fantastic views along the Canal on one side and the Merrimack River on the other.\n\nBuilt in 1847 just downstream of the Pawtucket Dam on the Merrimack River, the Canal carries water at a bit over 30 feet elevation above that of the river downstream. The Great River Wall (not seen here,) was constructed from giant blocks of granite in order to contain the canal on one side. The canal walls were also lined with granite. \n\nThe architects and builders of this canal decided to give it a dual purpose, both for providing the energy of water to run the turbines of several mills, and also to provide a scenic promenade for the citizens of Lowell. \n\nToday, the Northern Canal feeds a 24-megawatt hydroelectric plant instead of the mills, but the beautiful, tree-lined walkway still serves its important civic purpose.$
