The church was originally built around the year 1150 at Fortun in Sogn (in the Sognefjord). Threatened with demolition as a new church had been built to replace the old, the stave church was bought by consul Fredrik Georg Gade and saved by moving it in pieces to Fantoft in 1883. On 6 June 1992, the church was destroyed by arson. Reconstruction of the church began soon after the fire and was completed in 1997. The image was captured on old-fashioned 35mm black and white grainy ISO 400 film by an analogue (or analog) late 1980s 35 mm film camera and a fast lens with a red filter attached to darken the sky. The granularity in the image is real film grain (due to the presence of small particles of a metallic silver on the negative). Minimal post processing has been done (only adjustment of histogram). The image is part of a series of black and white film images of Fantoft Stave Church.

This wooden church is Norway's oldest stave church and is included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Dated from around 1130 the church is surrounded by a medieval cemetery and protected by a stone wall. Norwegian stave churches are the oldest preserved wooden churches in Christianity.
