$A stout clambering, woody, deciduous climber, to 30m. leaves pinnate, with toothed leaflets. Flowers greenish-white, 18-20mm, fragrant, in large panicles, terminal or lateral; sepals hairy beneath. Fruits forming large billowy, silver-gray, silky masses that persist well in the winter.\nHabitat: Woodland margins, hedgerows, scrub and tickets, on a variety of calcareous soils, generally lowland, but in mountains in the south of its range, to 2100m.\nFlowering Season: July-September.\nDistribution: Britain, Belgium, Holland, France and C & S Germany. Very vigorous and invasive, especially in young plantations and along railway embankments.\n\nThis is a quite common Species in the Dutch River Area and the Coastal Dunes in the Netherlands.$

An entanglement of Old Man’s Beard (Clematis vitalba) or Traveller’s Joy, a climbing plant which in spring has pretty white flowers and in the autumn produces the fluffy seed extensions (achenes) which give it the name of Old Man’s Beard. The seeds are scattered by birds, who frequently use the feathery extensions to line their nests. Oddly, it is a member of the buttercup family.
