The Paddy Skimmer is one of the smaller species of dragonfly that can be seen in the Western Ghats. Measuring about an inch long, their flight range is very limited, although apparently their breeding capabilities are unhindered, as they are without a doubt one of the most numerous species to be seen in fields, both wild and cultivated. The teneral (young) male has a black and gold body, green and red eyes, and would be difficult to distinguish from the female if it weren’t for the differences in their wings – the male’s (both in youth and maturity) are about half black, with the other half equally divided between a white strip and a transparent tip. The female’s wings are more complicatedly patterned, although mainly transparent.

The widow skimmer (Libellula luctuosa) is one of the group of dragonflies known as king skimmers. The nymphs live in the water, molting and growing until they are ready to emerge from the water and then molting a final time to reveal their wings. Annadel State Park, Sonoma County, California. Male animal.

Tot 42-45mm, Ab. 25-29mm, Hw 32-38mm.\n\nGeneral: A local species throughout our area that prefers slow-moving waters, bordered with tall emergent vegetation. The appearance of the male changes dramatically with maturation; vivid orange abdomen turn into black and grey-blue territorial males. \nMales frequently perch on waterside plants, making darting flights between perches.\nHabitat: Appears to require a certain combination of water quality and habitat structure (such as Reed borders). Include slow flowing rivers and streams, abandoned canals, reedy lakes and ditches, oxbows and fishponds.\nFlight Season: From April to early August, but activity concentrated in May and June in most of range.\nDistribution: Widespread through M Europe, habitat specific, therefore locally common.\n\nIn the Netherlands the Dragonfly is local common. The Males have a blue Abdomen.

Dragonflies are a genus of insects belonging to the order Odonates. The name Libellula derives from the Latin libra, or scales, so called because in flight it holds horizontal wings.

Twelve-spotted Skimmer Dragonfly
The black-winged dragonfly belongs to the family of dragonflies, a very primitive insect. It is distributed in Henan, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi, etc. The face is dark and hairy. Except for the slightly lighter base color of the front lip, the rest of the body and the top of the head are all blue-green or blue-brown with a metallic luster. The back of the head is brown, with hair on the rear edge. The prothorax is black. The front of the sternum is blue-green with thick hair, and the side of the sternum is dark green with sparse hair. Most of the wings are black with blue-green flashes, and a small part is transparent. The hind wings are black; the area from the base of the wing to the end of the wing knot and the end of the elbow vein of the forewing is black, with a small black spot at the end of the wing, and the rest is transparent and colorless. The legs are black. The abdomen and anal appendages are all black [1].
Tot 29-34mm, Ab 18-26mm, Hw 20-30mm\nGeneral: \nThe small, all black males are a familiar sight on bogs and moors in our northern regions.\nYounger males and females are easily distinguished by the black band marked with “golden drops” on the thorax side.\nOccurrence: \nCircumboreal, ranging to Japan and across North America. Generally common, even abundant on many acidic waters.\nHabitat: \nMostly acidic waters such as bogs, moorland and heathy lakes, but also breeds in small tarns, drying ponds and ditches.\nFlight Season: \nRelative late, from mid-June to early November, most abundant in August.\n\nThis is a common Species in the described Habitats in the Netherlands.

Perched dragonfly
Tot 32-39mm, Ab 23-27mm, Hw 30-33mm.\nThe largest whiteface and the prevailing one in many lowland and more eutrophic areas, although almost always very local. The conspicuous yellow spot on S7 identifies males and most females through binoculars.\nOccurrence:\nGenerally uncommon; populations are usually local and small. The most thermophilus Leucorrhinia, with a relative southern range.\nHabitat:\nGenerally inhabits less acidic and nutrient poor places than L. dubia and L. rubicunda, preferring marshy borders to bogs, forest lakes, fenlands, marshy ditches.\nVegetation is typically lush and varied, with both emergent and submerged species. The water is frequently mesotrophic and often colored brown due to peat.\nFlight Season:\nFrom early May to early August, with most records in late May and June.\n\nThis Picture is made in the Wieden (Overijssel, the Netherlands) in mid June of 2023.
