The migrant hawker is one of the smaller species of hawker dragonflies. It can be found away from water but for breeding it prefers still or slow-flowing water and can tolerate brackish sites. The flight period is from July to the end of October.

$Field characters: Tot 56-64mm, Ab 43-54mm, Hw 37-42mm. Distinctly smaller than most Aeshna species.\n\nThe commonest small hawker. Numerous in much of our area, and although it can be on the wing during most months in the Mediterranean, further north it is especially associated with late summer and autumn, when it may appear in massive migrations. $Field characters: 66-84mm, abdomen: 50-61mm, Hw: 45-52mm.\nBlue Emperor is presently a common species, which is only absent from parts of the northern provinces of Groningen and Friesland. It was previously mistaken for Hemicordia Australiae The difference was noticed when a normally aggressive Hemicordia Australiae males were observed ignoring what was thought to be other Hemicordia Australiae males . It was later discovered the ignored male dragonflies were Hemicordulia Armstrongi who have no interest in female Hemicordia Australiae dragonflies
