A red dragonfly can refer to several species, but commonly to the red-tailed dragonfly (genus Sympetrum), characterised by its intense red colour, which lives in Eurasia, and to Trithemis arteriosa, a smaller species from Africa and the Canary Islands. Both are insect predators that inhabit areas near fresh water, such as ponds and pools, and their larvae are aquatic.
