A member of Rubiaceae, the coffee family, Psychotria poeppigiana, commonly called hot lips or sore mouth bush, grows in tropical rainforest of South America such as Colombia and Costa Rica. As the blooming season approaches, its inflorescences are framed by two glossy, bright red bracts that look like a pair of pouting lips, hence the name of Hot Lips. The flowers themselves are inconspicuous, with the small yellow petals forming a narrow tube. The plant is gathered from the wild for local medical use.
