Fresco showing winged creature; probably a griffin. The Pompeians used the griffin in their murals, but this mythical creature goes back thousands of years, to India, Assyria and Persia. The creature is basically the combination of an eagle and a lion. The head and front of the body — including the front legs and wings — are represented by an eagle. In addition, the eagle head features long ears that are sometimes feathered. The rest of the body belongs to a lion. Altogether, the creature symbolizes strength and wisdom. Because the griffin traditionally guards treasure, he also symbolizes vengeance.\nDomus P. Cornelius Tages\nor House of the Ephebus

A detailed view of the Griffin on the facade of the Palazzo dei Priori, in the heart of the medieval city of Perugia, in Umbria, central Italy. The Griffin, a mythological figure formed half by an eagle and half by a lion, has been the symbol of the city of Perugia since medieval times. According to tradition, the Etruscans, an ancient people also present in Umbria, brought the griffin to Italy. The myth of the Griffin is in fact found depicted on Etruscan urns, sarcophagi and bas-reliefs. The Palazzo dei Priori (Priory Palace) is considered one of the greatest examples of public palace architecture in Italy. Still today the seat of the Municipality of Perugia (Town Hall), the building was built between 1293 and 1443 and inside it preserves works and frescoes by great artists, such as Pinturicchio, Perugino, Raffaello and Benedetto Bonfigli. Founded by the Etruscans on an ancient Umbrian settlement, Perugia is one of the most loved and visited medieval Italian cities, rich in artistic and architectural treasures that span almost three thousand years of history. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Griffin's man-made pond was once part of a natural watercourse (freshwater brook) that flowed through the Halifax Public Gardens. It has morphed into a stopping place for migrating birds with regular flyovers by cruising Ospreys. Home to more than 140 species of trees, the tree border of the Public Gardens is mostly composed of American Elms, European Lindens, Chinese and Wych Elms. These beautiful Victorian-era gardens are on the Halifax Peninsula. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1984. September 30, 2024.
