The Hoary Aster (Dietera canescens) is an annual plant in the daisy family and is also known as the hoary tansyaster.  It is native to western and central North America from British Columbia south to California, Sonora, and Chihuahua.  During the flowering season from June to November the plant produces one or more blue or purple blossoms.  These consist of pointed or curved petals and a yellow center.  Various habitats include dry, open areas in pine forests, chaparral and desert.  They grow at elevations from 150 to 8,000 feet.  These asters were photographed alongside the Brookbank Trail in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
