Rome, Italy - April 19, 2015: The Fountain of Neptune, Fontana del Nettuno, stands at the north end of Piazza Navona, Rome, Italy. The Piazza was regularly flooded between 1652 and 1866 on the weekends in August for games, including Roman Naval games. Today it is a constantly moving town square, with street performers, Christmas markets and sidewalk cafes. The Fountain of Neptune has a base made of white marble that was designed by Giacomo della Porta, but 300 years later Antonio Della Bitta added the sculpture of Neptune fighting an octopus to balance out the piazza, because the Moor Fountain at the south end had sculptures, as did Bernini's masterpiece in the center of Piazza Navona...the Fountain of the Four Rivers.
