The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei.

The eruption was one of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions in European history. The volcano is located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, about 5.6 mi east of Naples.
