Water is a scarce resource in the desert Southwest. In the early 1900's cattle ranchers, needing a natural water source, built a catch basin in this high desert area of California to capture rainfall and runoff. Later, a dam was built here by the Barker and Shay Cattle Company to expand the reservoir. Because of insufficient rainfall in the area, cattle ranching was a short lived enterprise. Today, Barker Reservoir in Joshua National Park, California is a quiet oasis, providing water and shelter for desert animals and migrating birds.

The Grand Tetons, part of the Teton Range in northwestern Wyoming, was formed over millions of years through tectonic activity, these mountains were further sculpted by glacial erosion. The history of Grand Teton National Park, established in 1929, is intertwined with early Native American presence, fur trading, and conservation efforts spearheaded by figures like John D. Two of the most striking features of the Mojave Desert in the American Southwest are the pillowy shaped rock formations and the strange looking plants that surround them. Heat and pressure over thousands of years transformed sedimentary rock into an entirely new kind of rock called gneiss. The Mojave Yucca (Yucca schidigera) Is also known as the Spanish Dagger because of its sharp spiny leaves. These Mojave Yucca were photographed at the Split Rock area in Joshua Tree National Park, California.

Only about 15 miles from Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers amazing vistas of colorful rocks, attracting two million visitors annually to its scenic drive, hiking trails, and rock climbing opportunities.

In the desert of Arches National Park in Utah the land is dry and consists of over 2000 natural arches. Here one seen at day in the summer.
