The Palace served as the residence and office of the shogun during his visits to Kyoto and is part of Nijo Castle, built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994.

On a clear morning in September 2024, in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, the southeast corner tower can be seen from the outer perimeter road that circles the outside of Nijo Castle.

The skyline of Kyoto stretches beneath a soft sky, with the iconic Kyoto Tower rising prominently above the cityscape. Traditional low-rise buildings blend with modern structures, capturing the balance between history and progress. In the distance, hazy mountains form a natural border, while the tower’s observation deck gleams in the light, offering panoramic views of the ancient capital reborn in the present.

Nijo Castle (Nijojo) was built in 1603 to serve as the Kyoto residence for Tokugawa Ieyasu (first shogun of the Edo Period). Twenty three years later, his grandson completed the castle's palace buildings and further expanded it by adding a five story castle keep. Here in this photograph (captured in September of 2007) you have a group of tourists exploring the compounds of Nijo Castle. In 1994, this cultural and historic landmark was designated a UNESCO world heritage site.

During the time of the first shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, in the Edo Period, the Nijo Castle was built, only to be completed 23 years later by the grandson of the firs shogun. This 275000 square meters houses gardens, ruins of palaces, and concentric fortifications; all amounting to Nijo castle being one of the the best surviving examples of Japanese architecture, and known worldwide as one of the few Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto from UNESCO.
