Vientiane, Laos: Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph) - Patuxai was built in the 1960s to a design by Tham Sayasthsena, as a “Monument to the Heroes of the Royal Army”, celebrating Laos' independence from France (1949). It was popularly known simply as Anousavali (monument) or in French as the 'Monument Aux Morts'. In 1995, on the 20th anniversary of the seizure of power by the communists of Pathet Lao, the triumphal arch was given the new dedication to “The Heroes of August 23, 1975” (Day of the Communist seizure of power in Vientiane).

Vientiane, Laos: Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph) - Patuxai was built in the 1960s as a “Monument to the Heroes of the Royal Army”, celebrating Laos' independence from France (1949).
