He was executed in 1535 on the order of King Henry VIII after refusing to swear an oath of succession repudiating the Pope and the Catholic Church, and for non-acceptance of the King’s marriage annulment to Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Boleyn.

It states that on 19 December 1679 that the 'Rose Alley Ambuscade' happened in which poet John Dryden was assaulted by masked men probably at the behest of John Wilmot, second Earl of Rochester, and the Duchess of Portsmouth, Charles II's mistress, because of an anonymous Essay on Satire, which mocked the monarch, the earl and the duchesses of Cleveland and Portsmouth. The piece was thought to have been written by Dryden but was in fact written by someone else.
