The Umayyad Mosque, also known as the Grand Mosque of Damascus, is one of the largest mosques in the world, and one of the oldest sites of continuous prayer since the rise of Islam. A shrine in the mosque is said to contain the head of John the Baptist.

Martyrs' Monument was built by Italian sculptor Marino Mazzacurati and was inaugurated in 1960. The monument is situated in downtown Beirut and was built in the honour of martyrs executed on Martyrs’ Square in 1916 at the orders of Ottoman military ruler Jamal Pasha.

Situated in the heart of Marjeh Square, this column complemented the square's role as a hub of administrative and civic life.
